Novice Creative Curriculum
The Novice Creative program seeks to improve and develop the young writers’ creative writing skills through a variety of methods, at the same time exposing them to many diverse works, improving their grammar and vocabulary, and, the greatest secondary effect, improving their reading comprehension. The primary focus then, is to show the student the elements of fictional stories and have them practice and eventually, cohesively employ them in their own writing. Structure, style, showing-not-telling as well as Plot, Character, Setting, Description, and Theme & Symbolism are all taught but subordinated to a justified narrative. Young writers often struggle to stay on a course or make sure that motives and causality make sense.
Aside from all of the important teachings mentioned above, realizing the wonderful reward of creative writing must be the principal goal to the novice student. Therefore, I have made sure that all the examples and lessons are not just instructive but enjoyable, intriguing and challenging. Once the creative writing fire is lit, then, and only then, can the student begin to improve and produce.
